Ortho K contacts are a great way to fix vision issues such as shortsightedness (myopia) and other vision issues such as farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and even presbyopia (farsightedness for the elderly).

What is Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho K?

It is a specially designed RGP contact lens (Rigid Gas Permeable) that you wear at night to reshape the curvature of the cornea while you’re sleeping. Then you take it off while you go about your day and put it on again when you go to sleep.

It is a non-surgical procedure and great alternative to glasses and LASIK. It has also been shown to slow down the deterioration of your vision.

Who Can Wear Ortho K Lenses?

Ortho K lens

We at Optikos recommend Ortho K for those with low to mild near-sightedness (-4 diopters or less). It is primarily used for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism and helps eliminate their dependence on single-vision glasses or daytime contact lenses. It is especially beneficial to children and teenagers whose vision is changing or who are too young for LASIK or other vision correction surgery.

Particularly appealing to those who are active in sports, we also recommend Ortho K for busy individuals whose work or daily activities constantly exposes them to dirty environments that can make wearing contact lenses highly uncomfortable.

How effective is Orthokeratology?

Our experience shows that our patients don’t need their glasses within the first day or two of wearing the lenses. Recent studies also show that orthokeratology proves to be highly effective in slowing down myopic progression in children by 36-56%. The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests, in a 2018 report, that Ortho K has a greater effect as a treatment for myopia in children and adolescents when initiated at an earlier age (6-8 years old).

What are Ortho K lenses made of?

Ortho K lenses are specialized contact lenses made of FDA approved materials—rigid gas permeable (RGP)—which gently reshapes the cornea towards a spherical shape and can be worn while sleeping.

How long can Ortho K lenses last?

With proper care, ortho k contacts can last up to three years and should be replaced as your prescription changes.
